AM Best began with the founder, Alfred M. Best, working out of a one-room office in New York City. The company remained in Manhattan for 66 years until, in 1965, it relocated across the Hudson to Morristown, NJ. Nine years later, AM Best had expanded
enough to necessitate another move, this time to the current location of its global headquarters in Oldwick, NJ. Constructed on a plot of 60 acres of farmland, the new building was modeled after a pillbox fortification diagram that then-president
Arthur Snyder Jr. had drawn during World War II. The architecture of a center structure flanked by two “defending” wings was designed to convey strength in the AM Best brand and business. A new twin building was later added in
January of 2000, just after the company’s 100-year anniversary. Situated between New York City and Philadelphia, the location continues to serve as AM Best’s meeting point to host leaders and decision makers from the insurance
The village of Oldwick, which is part of Tewksbury Township in New Jersey, was founded by English settlers in the 18th century and was originally known as "Smithfield.” After German and Dutch immigrants relocated to the village,
its name was changed to "New Germantown.” During World War I, residents once again changed the name of the village, this time from “New Germantown” to "Oldwick." Today, Oldwick stands as a quaint community that boasts several
remaining 19th century homes. AM Best’s global headquarters is only a short drive away from Oldwick’s historic district, which includes the Oldwick Market and Tewksbury Inn.
